Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of the use of oregano essential oil on reproductive efficiency in dairy cows with postpartum metritis. Methodology: Sixty first and second calving Holstein cows with clinical diagnosis of metritis were used. The cows were randomly distributed in two equal groups and were assigned the following treatments Control group (T0): Ceftiofur (20 ml) + aseptil red (30 ml) and Experimental group (T1): oregano essential oil 1% (50 ml), the application was intrauterine and only once. The parameters evaluated were: first heat presentation, calving - first service interval, pregnancy at first service, and days open. The data were analyzed with the Minitab v.18 statistical program using ANOVA and the proportions test. Results: There were no differences (P˃0.05) between T0 and T1 in the presentation of the first post-treatment estrus (93% vs 90%); percentage of pregnancy at first service (35.7% vs 51.7%) and; days open (98.36 vs 105.50 days); but there were differences (P˂0.05) in the presentation of calving interval - first service, it was lower in T0 compared to T1 (112.71 vs 133.30 days). Conclusions: Cows treated with oregano essential oil 1% presented reproductive parameters similar to the control, with the exception of calving - first service interval.
