New record of the exotic land planarian Bipalium kewense (Tricladida: Geoplanidae) in Cerro Punta, Tierras Altas, Chiriqui, Panama

Abstract

Objectives: To determine the land planarian species found in Cerro Punta, Chiriquí, Panama.Methodology: The presence of a planarian specimen with a hammer-shaped head was observed in thegarden of a residence located in Cerro Punta (8°51’50” N 82°34’58” W, 1862 m a.s.l.). The specimen was photographed, collected and deposited in ethanol 70% for its preservation. The specialized literaturewas consulted to facilitate identification at the laboratory. Results: The planarian species corresponds to Bipalium kewense Moseley, 1878 (Tricladida: Geoplanidae), which is native to Southeast Asia and hasa widespread occurrence around the world, as a result of horticultural practices and dispersion of potted plants in commerce. Conclusions: There is a new record of the exotic land planarian Bipalium kewensefor Cerro Punta, Tierras Altas District, Chiriquí, Panama.
